New Horizons Project supported by SAVE THE CHILDREN

New Horizons is a skill development and employment generation program initiated by Save the Children in Kolkata, India, with the aim of breaking the cycle of poverty among vulnerable adolescents and young people. In collaboration with Dhagagia Social Welfare Society, the program focuses on establishing a group business model in tailoring for rural marginalized youths in Sandeshkhali Block 1. Through a rigorous screening process, 38 youths in the age group of 18-24 years were selected for trades in Puffed Rice and Nursery. Both trades are now fully operational, and the participants have received technical training and support in income tracking, profit calculation, and expenditure tracking. Additionally, kitchen garden training was provided to the families of the beneficiaries, enhancing their self-sufficiency. The program has successfully set up two Puffed Rice units and two Nursery units, with the Anjali group being particularly successful, participating in trade fairs and expanding their networks. Block level interface meetings were organized to establish better linkages with government departments, and a Business Meet facilitated connections with the local market, ensuring sustainability. Another key achievement is the assistance provided in obtaining legal documents and linking the trainees and their family members with social protection schemes. Notably, a significant percentage of youths now have PAN cards, Aadhar rectification has been completed, and bank account linkages and caste certificate applications have been initiated. The program has made significant progress in empowering youths and their families with essential resources and opportunities for a better future.

Protecting Children through trained Child Protection Community Cadres

Our project focuses on protecting children through various initiatives, including the training of a Child Protection Community 'Cadre' and strengthening the formal Child Protection system at the village level. The main program areas include case management, training and capacity building of Village Level Child Protection Committees (VLCPCs) and Block Level Child Protection Committees (BLCPCs), and linking with social protection and social security schemes. We have received authorization letters from two blocks for VLCPC reformation and formed a total of 2 BLCPCs in Sandeshkhali-I & II Block. Additionally, we have facilitated training for 7 BLCPCs, restructured 201 VLCPCs (including 47 VLCPCs in the project area), and formed 206 children groups. Notably, we have prevented 49 child marriages, facilitated the admission of 87 dropout children to school, and re-admitted 61 child laborers to formal education. We have also linked 17 malnourished children to the Public Distribution System (PDS), assisted 159 children in obtaining SC/ST certificates out of 287, and connected 8 families with vulnerable children to the 100 days job guarantee scheme under MGNREGA. Additionally, we have identified 67 children with disabilities for the MANABIK Scheme, conducted 47 school sensitization programs in collaboration with government line departments, formed 47 Kanyashree Clubs to prevent child marriage and address anti-trafficking issues, and established 15 SWAYANSIDHA groups in collaboration with local police stations. Furthermore, two Child Cabinets have been formed to voice their demands during Gram Sava Meetings, and we have facilitated the Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP) for the betterment of children.

Child Protection

We are dedicated to safeguarding children in our operational areas, providing protection from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and violence. Our programs are designed to prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable children, while simultaneously working towards the safety and well-being of all children. Child Health

Our primary goal is to enhance the health and nutrition of mothers, newborn babies, and children, with a particular focus on impoverished and vulnerable communities. We strive to improve health-seeking behaviors and practices related to infant, young child, and maternal nutrition among local marginalized communities. These communities face severe impacts from environmental and climatic changes, as well as a deteriorating local economy. Additionally, we aim to strengthen the capacities of these communities and other responsible entities to prevent and address environmental health issues.

Livelihoods

We firmly believe that sustainable livelihoods play a crucial role in promoting child protection, as they create a supportive environment for growth. Accordingly, our efforts focus on enhancing the capacities and assets of vulnerable populations, with a particular emphasis on women and adolescents from underprivileged communities. We achieve this by providing vocational training and implementing livelihood strategies facilitated by Self Help Groups. Through these initiatives, we empower individuals to secure a sustainable source of income and contribute to a safer and more secure future for themselves and their children.

Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Risk Reduction

DSWS is committed to reducing the impact of disasters on children through effective preparedness, response, recovery, and advocacy. Children are at the focus of all our humanitarian action. The Child Health: We aim to improve health and nutrition of mothers, new-born babies and children, with special attention to poor and vulnerable communities. We work to improve health seeking behaviour and practices on Infant, Young Child, and Maternal Nutrition among local marginalized communities who are severely impacted due to changes in the environment and climatic condition in the region and the decaying local economy and to strengthen the capacities of communities and other duty bearers to prevent and respond to environmental health issues. Humanitarian response component is purely need based and looks at a range of issues such as nutrition, food security, livelihoods, water, sanitation and hygiene, psychosocial support and facilitation of peace building measures.
